Sunscreen
– When venturing outside during the day wear a minimum 15 spf
sunscreen. Be sure to reapply ever hour or so and more often if
participating in water activities (or as directed). Using a sunscreen
with zinc oxide is the best choice when choosing a sunscreen.
Wear a hat
– Most skin cancers happen on the head and neck. Wear a hat the covers
your neck and face. Full brimmed hats are the best choice to guarantee
full coverage.
Limit exposure
– Stay indoors during hottest part of day between Noon-4pm. If you go
outside during this time try to work in the shade whenever possible.
Sunglasses
– UV radiation damages the eye’s and leads to premature vision
problems. Be sure to purchase a pair of sunglasses that offer some level
of UV protection. Stay away from purchasing cheap sunglasses that offer
virtually no UV protection.
Clothing
– Wear a long sleeve shirt and pants to fully cover your arms and legs.
There are many light weight fabrics available that are comfortable and
stylish to fit your particular image.
Medications
– Some medications, particularly antibiotics and diuretics, make your
skin more sensitive to the damaging effects of the sun’s rays. Use extra
measures to protect your skin when taking antibiotics and other
medications. Consult your doctor every time that you are prescribed a
new medication.
Herbs and supplements
– People who are deficient in vitamin D are many more times likely to
get skin cancer caused by the sun’s rays. A daily diet containing foods
(or supplements) high in vitamin D is suggested. Cod liver supplements,
tofu, dairy products, fortified cereals, fish and soymilk offer high
levels of vitamin D. Spinach and carrots provide high levels of
beta-carotene which also help to reduce sunburn.
Avoid tanning beds
– Indoor tanning beds are not safe and cause cancer! Studies prove that
people who use tanning beds are many more times likely to get skin
cancer at some point in their life. Just like the sun’s rays tanning
beds cause premature aging, melanoma, wrinkles and skin spots.
Pay attention
– Internet data is posted daily for your area about what the expected
UV index is going to be. Many weather sites offer UV index data to help
you know when to be more careful outside in the sun. It is important to
take caution even on cloudy days because cloudy days can be deceptive
and can also have high UV index ratings.
Spray tanning – Research suggests that spray tanning
is the best alternative to getting a tan. While a sunless spray tan
does offer some protection from the suns radiation do not rely solely on
your spray tan to keep you protected. Take caution and keep in mind all
of the above when considering your health.
